Slide images used with the permission of Alexandra Presbyterian Church.
In April 2013 a box of old lantern slides was found in the organ loft of Alexandra Presbyterian Church in Belfast. The images were of soldiers and sailors from Castleton Presbyterian Church, Belfast, who served during the First World War.
The 77 slides were made by the famous photographer Alex H Hogg who was commissioned in 1918 by Castleton congregation to produce a lantern slide exhibition of their "men at the front".
The images include men who died during the war as well as those who survived. The names of these men appear in the Presbyterian Roll of Honour but help is needed to match the names to the images.
As an example of the research and feedback, the officer appearing on the left side of Slide 77 has been identified through a newspaper cutting which included the name, rank and address of the officer.
If you think you can help then go to the project website – castletonlanterns.co.uk – where you can view the images and find out more about the Project.
