Rev Robert Barron DD (1852-1942)
Minister of Whitehouse Presbyterian Church
by Rev Joseph Thompson DD

Whitehouse Presbyterian Church, Belfast, was opened in November 1869 and, following two short ministries, a young man, Robert Barron, was installed as the minister in 1875. From a farming family, Robert threw himself into the work of the new congregation on the Shore Road and in this booklet Joe Thompson records a remarkable ministry.
Robert had a warm evangelical heart, and as a prolific visitor he quickly built up the congregation and led it through the Home Rule crisis, the First World War and the Partition of Ireland. He became a household name nationally following the ‘Castledawson Incident’ in June 1912 when the Whitehouse Sunday School excursion was violently attacked. At the age of 41 he fell in love and his subsequent marriage to Mary Bigger became the joy of his life.
Using many sources, Joe Thompson has written a comprehensive biography of an outstanding minister through tumultuous times.
