When the City of London Livery Companies sold much of their lands in north-west Ulster in the late 1800s, Rev John Johnston of Cumber Lower Presbyterian Church and others advanced the argument that the Livery Companies held the proceeds of sale on trust for the people of Ireland, in litigation known as the Ulster Plantation Case, 1892-98.
